A flexible sigmoidoscopy procedure examines the lower part of the large intestine using a thin, flexible tube-like device outfitted with a miniaturized camera, used to take pictures of the sigmoid colon. A sigmoidoscopy is one way to look for colorectal cancer or other growths, called polyps. If your doctor finds polyps during your procedure, you may also need a colonoscopy to examine for additional polyps throughout your entire large intestine. The flexible sigmoidoscopy may also look for the cause of bowel issues, such as bleeding, a change in bowel movements, or other problems.
